Kevin Garry joined the family business, Garry Associates, right out of college in 1985. Kevin graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Business and served six years as a non-commissioned officer in the South Dakota National Guard’s 147th Field Artillery.
Kevin has attained his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) designations. He prides himself in doing complete financial and estate planning, and his process takes his clients though all of the necessary areas of planning that need to be addressed. Whether it is retirement planning, such as a 401(k) rollover, or making sure that family members are provided for in the event of an unexpected death, Kevin looks at all of the opportunities and potential pitfalls in his clients’ finances.
When considering rolling over the proceeds from your retirement plan to another tax-qualified vehicle, note that you have options, including leaving the funds in your existing plan, or rolling it over to a new employer’s plan. Depending on the option you select, there may be fees, expenses, and taxes upon withdrawal. Please consult a tax advisor before withdrawing funds.
After his sister, Cathy, passed away in May of 2019, the family could not be more thankful for the estate plan that was set in place years ago. Cathy was a large farm and ranch owner with her husband, Steve. The farm was able to continue on through Steve and their children after Kevin and the Garry Associates team helped to execute the detailed plans.
Kevin states, “There are so many people walking the walk in their planning situation, but they are not sure where the sidewalk will take them.” Through state of the art technology, Kevin and his team are able to set up planning modules that will tell you where your current and/or future financial plans will take you so you can be confident in your path forward.
Kevin grew up in rural South Dakota in the small town of Salem and has resided in Sioux Falls since 1985. Kevin is married to Melissa, who is a retired nurse from one of the local hospitals. Kevin’s son, Tyler, has been a Partner with Garry Associates for the past decade and a half. Kevin says, “It is wonderful having your son follow in your footsteps with his professional career.” Kevin and Melissa’s daughter, Mahli, has a career in education and resides in Boston, MA. Kevin is a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, and in his free time, he enjoys all sports (especially golf and hunting) and spending time with his wife, kids, and especially his grandkids.

Kevin was named on the 2022 Forbes Top Financial Security Professionals Best-In-State list for South Dakota!
Neither SHOOK nor Forbes receives any compensation in exchange for placement on its Top Financial Security Professional (FSP) rankings (including the Best-In-State Financial Security Professional rankings), which are determined independently (see methodology). FSP refers to professionals who are properly licensed to sell life insurance and annuities. FSPs may also hold other credentials and licenses which would allow them to offer investments and securities products through those licenses. The ranking algorithm is based on qualitative measures learned through telephone, virtual and in-person interviews to measure best practices, client retention, industry experience, credentials, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, such as assets under management, sales figures, and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and these professionals rarely have audited performance reports. Individuals must carefully choose the right FSP for their own situation and perform their own due diligence. SHOOK’s research and rankings provide opinions intended to help individuals choose the right FSP and are not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. Past performance is not an indication of future results. For more information, please see www.SHOOKresearch.com. SHOOK is a registered trademark of SHOOK Research, LLC
